HOW TO TAKE CARE OF INDOOR PLANTS (part 1)

Updated: Sep 20, 2022

WATERING PLANTS

  • Water your plants regularly.

Why is it important to water your plants regularly?

Flowers, fruits, and plant seeds all require water for healthy growth and development. The plant roots take up water. Minerals and fertilizers are also absorbed along with the water. Water makes up nearly 90% of all plants. The germination of seeds cannot occur under dry conditions, hence water is necessary. Each component of the plant receives nutrients that have been dissolved in the water. Additionally, water shields the crop from hot air currents and frost. Fields must be routinely watered to keep the soil moist for wholesome crop growth.

  • Maintain soil moisture.

In order to regulate the movement of water and heat energy between the land surface and the atmosphere through evaporation and plant transpiration, soil moisture is a crucial factor. As a result, soil moisture is crucial to the formation of weather patterns and the precipitation cycle.

It aids in reintroducing organic matter to the soil, improving its capacity to retain water, and acting as an insulator against excessive or insufficient rainfall. Additionally, choosing the right varieties allows for the development of deeper root systems, which can aid in reintroducing nitrogen to the soil.

  • The plant's growth may be hampered by either the soil being too wet or too dry.

The roots of plants require oxygen. The oxygen content of soil is decreased, and plant roots only absorb a small amount of oxygen when it is overly moist or waterlogged. Plant beds may act like sponges in a bowl of water when there is an abundance of water, retaining the water and rejecting the oxygen.

The plant experiences drought stress, which causes the decrease of turgor due to dry soil and a high rate of water loss through transpiration. As a result, the growth rate decreases and some structures' development is affected. As a result, plants grow shorter in dry settings.

IN RARE CIRCUMSTANCES, THE PLANT WILL DIE IF IT RECEIVES TOO LITTLE OR TOO MUCH WATER. MORE WATER IS REQUIRED BY PLANTS WITH LUSH, THICK LEAVES COMPARED TO THOSE WITH WAXY OR LEATHERY LEAVES.

If there are mould growths on the soil's surface or if water is collecting at the bottom of the container, the plant has been overwatered.

When a plant's soil appears fractured or changes colour, water it.

Plants can be killed by standing water. Pour off any standing water if you notice it in the pot or under it.
