How well are your plants doing this year? Are they robust, healthy, and overflowing with flowers & fruit? Or are they ailing, with withering leaves and fewer blooms, and in need of a hearty meal to fuel them ?
All living forms need food to survive. Just like humans and animals, even plants need more than just sunlight or water to live. They require nutrients as well. One should take good care of their plants and provide them nutrients that they can't obtain from the soil. By adding fresh fertile soil or fertilizer you can improve the soil's natural nutrition and help your plants grow.
A plant's ability to grow quickly depends on the nutrition of the soil. Simply replacing the barren topsoil with nutrient-rich soil is all that is necessary. By doing so, you can replace the soil's requirements and promote the growth of healthy plants. That's not enough, however; selecting the appropriate soil type is also crucial. Knowing what it is you are planting and the kind of soil it requires can help you operate correctly after that. Varying plants require different amounts of nutrition. Simply replacing the topsoil won't cut it. You must also keep a close watch on plant species that are big feeders and need additional nutrients.
Similar to how humans must eat a variety of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins, plants require a variety of nutrients. In particular, they require nitrogen (N) for the growth of leaves, phosphorus (P) for the growth of roots, and potassium (K) for the formation of fruit. All plants require all three, although nitrogen is especially important for leafy crops, while fruit crops won't grow effectively without enough potassium. They also require a large number of additional nutrients, typically in very little amounts.
